For the vast majority of websites, shared hosting is the right answer — even at thousands of visitors a month. You only move to a server of your own when you hit a limit that a larger plan cannot solve.

1. What kind of site is it?

A business site, blog, portfolio or association site almost always fits within what a shared plan handles. A web shop with a large catalogue or an application with many simultaneous users does not.

Ordinary site → shared hosting. Heavy shop or application → VPS or dedicated server.

2. Do you need root access or your own server software?

Do you want to install packages, run a service of your own or change the server configuration? On shared hosting that is not possible — there you work within the control panel.

Yes → a VPS. No → shared hosting is enough.

3. Are you structurally hitting the limits?

Not one busy day, but a site that keeps filling the disk space or exhausting the memory. If the same thing happens within months after every cleanup, the plan has become too small.

Yes → a larger plan first, only then a VPS.

4. How much do you want to manage yourself?

A server of your own gives control, but also responsibility: updates, security, monitoring. On a managed VPS we take that server administration off your hands; on an unmanaged server we do not.

5. Do you already have hardware or tied licences?

Some software is tied to a specific machine, and sometimes a server already exists that you want to keep using.

Shared hosting. A business site, blog, portfolio or association site fits comfortably within what a shared plan handles, even at thousands of visitors a month. A larger plan or a server of your own is only needed once you hit a real limit.
When you need root access, want to run your own server software, or when your site structurally reaches the limits of the plan. One busy day is not a reason; the same problem returning after every cleanup is.
On a VPS you share the physical machine with others, but your memory and processor cores are assigned to you. On a dedicated server the whole machine is yours. You only notice the difference under heavy, sustained load.

Not automatically. A larger plan gives more space and more memory per request, but if your site is slow because of a heavy plugin or oversized images, more capacity will not fix that. Measure where the slowness comes from first.
Yes, and that is usually the sensible order. Start with what you need today and move up when it pinches. Switching costs less than paying for months of capacity you do not use.
